Does sleep apnea treatment still help after 65?
Georgetown is home to Sun City Texas, a large community for adults 55 and older. Many older adults ask if it is too late to treat sleep apnea. Research says age alone is not a reason to skip treatment.
- Less sleepiness — In a trial of 278 adults 65 and older, CPAP (a bedside machine that keeps the airway open with gentle air pressure) reduced daytime sleepiness. The benefit lasted to 12 months.
- Over 70 — A trial of 145 adults 70 and older with moderate sleep apnea also found less daytime sleepiness with CPAP.
- Regular use matters — People who used CPAP more improved the most.
- Limits — In these trials, CPAP did not clearly change memory test scores or blood pressure.
